    Lots of good aspects to that message. A couple of things about it concerned me – i will just throw them out there – and you can set me straight if i have heard it wrong.

    Apart from the “died for you” comment that could have been died for sinners like you…

    the use of the word “pleading” in the example of Christ with one hand holding back the wrath of heaven and the other held out pleading with you to take hold of salvation, does Christ plead or command? Pleading implies an inability on His behalf to make the salvation He has provided effective for “you” doesn’t it? Isn’t it the Spirit that draws the sinner when the sinner hears the COMMAND to repent and believe – to come?

    This is a long comment that I should probably have done as a post.
    I think Washer has really drifted way off the mark of a faithful Gospel presentation here. I want to explain why. Let’s have a look.

    God’s longsuffering is “love” only to His people, often termed the elect in the Bible, but that same longsuffering is also letting the cup of His anger fill right up in readiness for final judgement to all those who don’t and will never believe (sometimes called reprobate). We never see Jesus in the bible pleading with unbelievers to accept the love of God. We see him always commanding repentance, faith and obedience and warning of the consequences of continuing to trust in one’s own righteousness or live wilfully in sin. Luke 13:2 The fact that He died for sinners doesnt mean that he died for “you”. The fact that he never turns any away that come to him in repentance and faith doesn’t mean that He accepts and forgives all people already and is just pathetically and impotently waiting and hoping that they will come so they can cash in their pre paid salvation voucher. It simply means that when his lost sheep hear the voice of the shepherd telling them where they have strayed to the Spirit makes that message real to them and they respond by running back to the shepherd for salvation. It means that good ground (hearts prepared by the spirit) receive the seed (the gospel) and have a saving response. But the Gospel is not “Jesus died for you” and the response to the true gospel is not possible to an unconverted, spiritually dead heart.
    Why are people so afraid to let God’s message of good news for sinners, continue to be preached in the same way that Jesus and the apostles preached it. The sermons that God used to save thousands in Acts, don’t have a hint of the false statements like “Jesus died for you” “Jesus died for all sinners” “Will you accept his plea to be forgiven?” “God loves you and sent Jesus to die for you but he cant save you unless you let him” and other such nonsense.
    36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” (Note he didn’t at this crucial point jump his audience to the false conclusion that Jesus paid for all of their sins necessarily, but rather made the accurate and general statement that Jesus is the Saviour from God, the promised Messiah, the sin bearer)
    37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Notice how the Spirit used this truth to convert them, not a lie to persuade them that they were special or that they should already know that Jesus died for “them” or that God loved them)
    38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” (The promise of salvation is experienced through faith by all that God calls and all that God calls in this inward and saving manner will be convicted of their sinfulness and will be lead by the Holy Spirit to repent and believe in Jesus Christ for their salvation).
    What did Jesus actually say about loving all people, dying for all or telling all that God loved them? Surely the fact that millions of people that follow him today, promote these and other similar messages must mean that He said these sort of things and such words were recorded in the gospels for us to then send out as His message, His gospel into the world to save sinners. Try John 17
    1 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should[a] give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.
    20 “I do not pray for these alone (disciples), but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;(the elect) 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 (Jesus is praying for his people before he makes final atonement for them. e.g. satisfies God’s justice for their sins.)
    Jesus the Son of God, actually knew who he would die for before the foundations of the earth, it was not conditional upon their belief (those he would die for), his atonement would purchase and give faith as a gift to all that the Father had given Him. Their faith, our faith, my faith and your faith (if you have it) is a result of God’s plan, God’s power and God’s provision. It is a gift from start to finish. Try Ephesians 1
    1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God,

    To the saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus:

    2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
    Redemption in Christ

    3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
    7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both[a] which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.
    The bible doesn’t actually support a universal atonement and conditional election theology. We shouldn’t either. Evangelism only works because it depends on God’s sovereignty in all of salvation.

  4. I see what you’re getting at, Josh. Our salvation is not a product of our own belief and repentance, rather, it is a gift through faith:
    “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)

    I’d like to know what your gospel message would be, Josh. 🙂

  5. Josh – yeah I’ve had a moment to review this message again and you are right; Washer recklessly jumps in and out of theological positions. Here is a summary of some key transitions (or potential contradictions)

    “Bore the sins of his people” (Reformed)

    “Jesus Christ died in your place …he paid your fine …payment for your sins.” (Arminian or even Universalism)

    “Given as a ransom for all… Christ died for your sins” (Arminian or even Universalism)

    “He will save his people” (Reformed)

    “No one who ever came to Christ will ever be cast out” (Reformed)

    I am now a little embarrassed to have endorsed this message in our Gift of the Gospel series. It’s not what we are on about. But it goes to prove the point just how careful we need to be when we are sharing the gospel if we want to be biblically faithful. It is so attractive to want to get on the band wagon.
