Fear Scale Evangelism

Hi,

I am in the process of writing a script for a short film – Fear Scale Evangelism. (I would like to call it fear factor evangelism but I don’t know if that is OK.)

I want you suggestions on what is the most fearful way to evangelise, ie:

  • walk up to a stranger (wuts) evangelism
  • random call up on the telephone evangelism
  • evangelising to a family member
  • evangelising to a person you do business with
  • handing out tracts on a street corner
  • hiding tracts on cars and in public places, library books, etc
  • setting up a blog to evangelise to the lost
  • making a film and putting it on youtube
  • open air preaching to a crowd
  • etc,

Can you suggest any more categories and sugestions for the film? I think that comedy is a good way to explore the issue of fear in evangelism.

Also – if you gave a score out of 10 for the most fearful thing to do, how would you rate the bulleted list above?

  1. A 10 is most likey any of the one-on-one evangelisms, such as to a stranger, to a family member, or to a business partner.

The easiest one is definitely hiding tracts or starting a blog because it requires no confrontation, and open air preaching is somewhere in the middle depending on your publick speaking skills and your fear of public speaking.
Handing out tracts and making a film are also somewhere in the middle, because they require some confrontation but not so much depth to it.

In short, the most fearful ones are one-on-one and the least fearful ones are the ones that don’t require confrontation and preserve your privacy.

  2. Right – family/friend/stranger/new-friend discussion about the gospel is probably the most fearful. I think it is nice to figure out some sort of order becasue it can be useful for giving fearful people ideas of things they could do.

Georgie has posted an extract from a book expoloring the ‘fear of man in evangelism.’ I would like to get my hands on a copy too.

  3. I thought I posted already… apparently not. Maybe my reply got wiped out.

So… on a scale, here’s what I think from least to most fearful:

    – setting up a blog to evangelise to the lost
    – making a film and putting it on youtube
    – hiding tracts on cars and in public places, library books, etc
    – random call up on the telephone evangelism
    – handing out tracts on a street corner
    – open air preaching to a crowd
    – walk up to a stranger (wuts) evangelism
    – evangelising to a person you do business with
    – evangelising to a family member

Once again, my reasoning for this is that non-confrontational witnessing allows you to keep your space and your privacy, giving yourself the comfort you want. Of course, the negative side to this is that it barely makes a splash. Unless I can drive more people to my blog, it’s going to flop. So please visit.
That’s my reasoning for the first three to four bullets.

The last five are face-to-face meetings. Scary, unnerving, but they allow you to interact with the person and answer their questions, which means that you make a bigger impact.

But here’s the thing. Do you want to get over your fear? Because the way to do that is to plunge into it headfirst. I know, scary. But start small. Hide tracts in windshield wipers, like I do. That way the driver notices it and can’t ignore it. Hide them everywhere. Coin slots for pay phones and vending machines. Restaurants, tips, get creative! And then after a couple weeks, kick it up a notch. Hand them out. Answer questions. Don’t start handing them out when you get comfortable, because here’s the catch- you’ll most likely not get comfortable that quickly. And unless the sinners are willing to wait for years, you’ve got to move from hiding to handing in weeks. Then after another couple of weeks, approach people. And take it from there.

Or if you’re feeling adventurous, listen to Ray Comfort’s “Hell’s Best Kept Secret,” get some tracts from http://www.customtractsource.com/ and go fish!

(Please, please, please visit my blog and check back regularly, to those of you who read my comments. Thank you so much. If I could just get my blog to fly, it would be absolutely great…)
